The Holy Spirit: A Divine Person – His Work and Ministry in the Life of a Disciple

This Bible study provides a comprehensive view of the Holy Spirit’s divine nature, work, and ministry in a believer’s life, equipping disciples of Jesus to live by His power.

1. The Holy Spirit as a Divine Person

a. The Holy Spirit is God

πŸ“– Acts 5:3-4 – β€œBut Peter said, β€˜Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.’ β€œ

Peter equates lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God.

πŸ“– 2 Corinthians 3:17 – β€œNow the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

  • The Holy Spirit possesses divine attributes such as
    • omniscience (1 Corinthians 2:10-11),
    • omnipresence (Psalm 139:7-8), and
    • omnipotence (Luke 1:35).

b. The Holy Spirit Has a Personal Nature

πŸ“– John 14:16-17 β€œ β€˜And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you foreverβ€” the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

Jesus calls Him β€˜another Helper,’ indicating a distinct person.

πŸ“– Ephesians 4:30 β€œdo not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

The Holy Spirit can be grieved, demonstrating emotions.

πŸ“– Romans 8:26 β€œLikewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

c. He intercedes for believers, showing intelligence and will.

  • The Holy Spirit speaks (Acts 13:2),
  • teaches (John 14:26),
  • and guides (John 16:13).

2. The Work of the Holy Spirit in Salvation

The Holy Spirit seals believers as a guarantee of their inheritance.

πŸ“– Romans 8:16 – β€œThe Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

3. The Holy Spirit’s Role in the Life of a Disciple

a. Empowering for Witness and Service

πŸ“– Acts 1:8 – β€œBut you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me.”

πŸ“– 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 – β€œBut the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

b. The Spirit gives spiritual gifts for ministry.

  • The Holy Spirit equips believers to share the gospel, serve in the congregation, and glorify Messiah.

c. Sanctification and Producing the Fruit of the Spirit

πŸ“– Galatians 5:22-23 – β€œBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

The fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, etc.

πŸ“– 2 Corinthians 3:18 – β€œBut we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (NKJV)

πŸ“– 1 John 2:27 – β€œBut the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.”

The anointing of the Spirit teaches believers.

  • The Holy Spirit leads believers in understanding and applying God’s Word.

a. Interceding in Prayer

πŸ“– Romans 8:26-27 – β€œLikewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

The Spirit intercedes for believers according to God’s will.

  • When we do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit prays for us.
