The State of the Dead: Hope in the Resurrection.
What happens when we die? Many believe in an immortal soul that continues to live after death, but what does the Bible actually say? This study explores the biblical teaching on the state of the dead and the hope of resurrection at Christ’s second coming.
1. The Nature of Human Life and Death
We Are Not Immortal Beings
• Genesis 2:7 – “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
🔹 Key Point: Man is not inherently immortal. Life is the result of God’s breath combined with the body.
• Ecclesiastes 12:7 – “And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”
🔹 Key Point: At death, the body returns to dust, and the spirit (breath of life) goes back to God.
• Job 27:3 – “As long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils.”
🔹 Key Point: The spirit is the breath of God that sustains life, not a conscious soul.
2. The State of the Dead: No Consciousness
The Dead Do Not Think, Praise, or Know Anything
• Psalm 146:3-4 – “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.”
🔹 Key Point: The dead have no thoughts or plans.
• Psalm 115:17 – “The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence.”
🔹 Key Point: If people went to heaven immediately, they would praise God—but the Bible says they do not.
• Psalm 6:5 – “For in death there is no remembrance of You; in Sheol who will give You praise?”
🔹 Key Point: The dead do not remember or praise God.
• Ecclesiastes 9:5 – “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.”
🔹 Key Point: The dead are completely unconscious and unaware.
• Acts 2:34 – “For David did not ascend into the heavens.”
🔹 Key Point: Even King David, a man after God’s heart, is not in heaven yet.
3. Jesus and the Sleep of Death
Death Is Like Sleep
• John 11:11-14 – “After saying these things, He said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.’ The disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.’ Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He meant taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, ‘Lazarus has died.’”
🔹 Key Point: Jesus describes death as sleep, not as the soul going to heaven or hell.
• John 19:25-26 – “But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’”
🔹 Key Point: Jesus entrusted His mother to John, not expecting her to meet Him in heaven immediately.
4. The Wages of Sin and God’s Gift
Sin Brings Death, Not Eternal Life in Another State
• Ezekiel 18:4 – “Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine: the soul who sins shall die.”
🔹 Key Point: The soul is not immortal—it dies because of sin.
• Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
🔹 Key Point: Eternal life is a gift from God, not something humans naturally possess.
• 1 Timothy 6:16 – “Who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see.”
🔹 Key Point: Only God has immortality; humans do not.
• Romans 2:7 – “To those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, He will give eternal life.”
🔹 Key Point: We must seek immortality—it is not inherent in us.
5. The Resurrection: Our Blessed Hope
The Dead Will Be Raised When Jesus Returns
• 1 Thessalonians 4:15-16 – “For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.”
🔹 Key Point: The dead in Christ will be resurrected at Jesus’ second coming.
• John 5:28-29 – “Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.”
🔹 Key Point: The resurrection is the moment when the dead are brought back to life.
• 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 – “Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’”
🔹 Key Point: We receive immortality at the resurrection, not at death.
• 2 Timothy 4:7-8 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
🔹 Key Point: The reward is given at Christ’s return, not at death.
• Revelation 22:12 – “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.”
🔹 Key Point: Jesus brings the reward when He comes back, not before.
Conclusion:
Our Hope in the Resurrection
1. Death is an unconscious sleep until the resurrection.
2. The dead do not go to heaven or hell immediately—they await Christ’s return.
3. Only God is immortal, and He grants eternal life at the resurrection.
4. Our hope is in Jesus’ second coming, when the dead in Christ will rise to eternal life.
The Bible clearly teaches that the dead are unconscious, awaiting the resurrection at Jesus’ return. Only God has immortality, and eternal life is a gift given through Christ. Our hope is in His return, when the righteous will be raised to eternal life and the faithful will receive their reward. Let us find peace and assurance in the promise of the resurrection!
